endeavor CONVERSATIONS

The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to being a part of the solution against racism in our community. As part of that promise, we invite you to join our Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity committee in conversations and to be a part of that much-needed change.

We will continue bringing partners together from various organizations that represent our Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) community to understand how we can better support their work and to identify shared goals and strategies for accomplishing collective impact.

Endeavor Conversations are sponsored by
Kaiser Permanente, with additional support from Northwest Community Credit Union.

DESTIGMATIZING DISABILITIES

In Oregon, 26% of our adult population (1 in 4 adults) live with some type of disability. We can all play a role in supporting programs, initiatives, and organizations that advocate making our community one where people with disabilities can live well and actively.  At this event, you'll learn how to become a better ally, and how to support some of these organizations doing the work. We will hear from:
  • Mandie Pritchard, MA.  Lane Community College, Associate Dean Accessibility and Testing Support & Interim International Programs Director
  • Sue Warren, Northwest Association of Blind Athletes, Senior Director of Development & Communications
  • Aunia Kahn, CEO, Rise Visible

GENDER INCLUSION IN THE WORKSPACE

Increasingly employees are entering the workplace with gender identities and expressions that may be different from what we most frequently think of when discussing gender. We've all seen in by now pronouns such as “they, them and theirs” instead of the gendered “he, him and his” or “she, her and hers. Adding them to our email signatures is becoming a normal practice.
The experience of being misgendered can be hurtful, angering, and even distracting. The experience of accidentally misgendering someone can be embarrassing for both parties, creating tension and leading to communication breakdowns across teams and with customers.
Our conversation with Cass Averill, President & Co-Founder of Transponder will cover key elements on how to address pronouns in the workplace, with employees or co-workers, and how to cultivate a safe and inclusive workplace for all.

equity work from within: internal dei committees

In today’s professional world, establishing diverse, equal, and inclusive (DEI) practices for your business is imperative. Not only is it important for your employees, but creating an inclusive business can improve your profits, as well as employee retention, talent recruitment, and innovation (US Chamber of Commerce). Forming an internal DEI Committee is one of the initial steps of the journey and an excellent way to get your employees involved in the process.
Our conversation will cover the challenges, successes, and opportunities of local companies and organizations and their DEI Committees. Our panelists include individuals from the non-profit, corporate, and small business sectors. Come to learn about more about their experiences!

Culturally competent healthcare

Each year, the theme of the celebration of Black History Month changes. This responsibility is given to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, which is the non-profit organization that founded this tradition in 1926. This year's theme is Black Health and Wellness and considers activities, rituals, and initiatives that Black Communities have done to be well. In the Eugene community we have organizations like Volunteers in Medicine. Additionally, bigger organizations like Kaiser Permanente and PeaceHealth, are striking their own initiatives to make healthcare more inclusive.
Join the conversation and learn more about the challenges that black and other unrepresented communities face when taking care of themselves, and about local organizations working towards a culturally competent care system.

never have i ever...

Never Have I Ever...Have you ever played the game? At our next Endeavor event, Damien Pitts will lead us through an interactive activity where we will self-reflect and find ways to move past our own biases. Have you ever sang lyrics to an inappropriate song? Clutched your purse? Made assumptions because someone is a foreigner? We are not perfect, but reflection and shared practices on how to improve can help us on our journey—join us for the conversation. Never will you ever find another exercise reflection like this!

Bipoc-owned business relief

As we work to build a more welcoming community where Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals feel like they belong and are valued, we want to connect BIPOC businesses with local funding relief options that may assist them in successful business recovery.
Oregon Pacific Bank is partnering with the Eugene Chamber and the NAACP to provide resources, answer business owner’s questions, and take next steps to help BIPOC-owned businesses receive the support they need.
Together we will learn about the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loans, loan forgiveness, other SBA (Small Business Administration) loans, Community Lending Works, and some general financial advice on combatting COVID-19.
Bring your questions for the financial experts, we hope to match business needs with these resources.

women of color in the workforce

How can we support each other to achieve collective greatness? We’ve invited a panel of diverse women to talk about their experiences in life, in our community, and in their careers.
Each panelist’s unique journey brought them to the place they are today; being women of color, each has a different story to tell but with some trends we can explore relating to obstacles and bias’ they have faced. Their wisdom and experience will help lead our discussion on what we hope the future will look like and how we can take steps to make it a reality.
We invite you to come and hear their personal stories so we can appreciate the impact they have in our community and empower current and future Black, Indigenous and People of Color to thrive in the workplace.

Current Cohort Meeting Dates: September 22nd, October 6th, October 20th, November 3rd, and November 17th.

This 5-session course will help your organization create long-lasting change toward Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity. With the knowledge, tools, and confidence learned, you’ll create a custom plan for your business to continue your work in Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity.
The course is structured for area leaders, who wish to build their knowledge and implement change to make Eugene-Springfield businesses more welcoming and inclusive. Small groups will convene to discuss, learn, and navigate challenges and solutions with their peers, and problem solve together. Participants will meet for ALL 5 courses together, every other week for 90-minutes. Each session is facilitated by a content expert who will guide the cohort, frame each session, and provide tools and resources.
